I spent years trying to find clean oral care that was actually clean. Not clean-adjacent. Not natural in the legal sense where the word means almost nothing. Actually clean.
Every brand had a caveat. Usually several. The ones that marketed themselves as natural were still using ingredient blends hidden behind the word "fragrance" — a legal catch-all that can conceal dozens of synthetic compounds without any disclosure requirement. Others sourced their key ingredients cheaply, from suppliers who don't publish their process, and padded formulas with fillers that don't have to appear on the label if they're classified as processing aids.
The market for clean oral care is heavily greenwashed. The word "natural" has no enforceable standard in this category. Brands know this and they use it. I kept reading labels, and the more I understood about what I was reading, the more obvious it became that what I was looking for simply didn't exist yet.
The packaging problem
The container matters as much as what's inside it.
Most toothpaste tubes are soft plastic. They sit in supplier warehouses, then brand warehouses, then distributor warehouses — often for months — before they ship. Heat accelerates chemical migration from plastic into whatever the plastic is holding. By the time a tube reaches you, it has likely been sitting somewhere warm for a long time.
This is not theoretical. Phthalates and BPA analogues migrate from packaging into oral care products at measurable rates under normal storage conditions. No one is required to disclose this. Most brands haven't thought about it past the label.
I chose packaging with the same scrutiny I applied to the formula itself. If the container compromises what's inside, it doesn't matter what the label says.

The brush problem

Nylon bristles shed microplastic particles every time you brush. Not in large amounts — but consistently, directly onto the oral mucosa, one of the most permeable and absorbent surfaces in the body. The particles are small enough to cross the mucosal barrier and enter the bloodstream.
I went looking for a brush without nylon. Most "natural" toothbrushes solve the handle — bamboo, wood — and leave the same nylon bristles in place. That is a marketing decision, not a health one. It looks cleaner. It isn't.
The Cetemps brush uses natural boar hair bristles. No nylon. No microplastic shedding. It also cleans better — boar hair is naturally tapered, reaching between teeth in a way synthetic bristles can't replicate. This is not a compromise. It's the right answer.

No half-measures.
Every ingredient in the formula is named and explained. No "fragrance." No "natural flavors." No processing aids that don't have to appear on the label. If it's in the tube, it's on the list.
We chose the container with the same scrutiny as the formula. Our packaging doesn't leach. We didn't design the label and then buy the cheapest tube that fits — we sourced the tube and then designed around what it could actually protect.
A bamboo handle with nylon bristles is a cosmetic change. We don't do that. Boar hair bristles — no polymer, no microplastic shedding, and a genuinely better clean. The whole brush holds up to the same standard.
